Reversing Chronic Disease with a Whole Food Plant-Based Diet

As evidenced by a solid body of scientific research on the benefits of Whole Food Plant-Based (WFPB) diet, plants provide exquisite nutrition for chronic diseases. That’s because our body, like our planet, is a delicate ecosystem. When we have an imbalance in our body, it can manifest as chronic illness. When we then attempt to utilize pharmaceuticals or surgery to treat that illness, we can interrupt the interconnected flow of our ecosystem and further exacerbate the initial imbalance. Consider the fact that the "side effect" of medications can be death: More than 100,000 people die every year from taking medications as prescribed, making adverse reactions from prescription medications the 6th leading cause of death in the U.S, after heart disease, cancer, chronic respiratory disease, strokes and accidents.

Plants, to the contrary, are an inherent part of the life force in us. When we ingest plants, we connect to the energies of sunshine, rain, birds, worms, bees, and all other dynamic ecological forces that participated in creating the food we eat. We effectively reconnect to our nature and vitality. Amazingly, plant molecules bind to our own DNA and alter how that DNA is expressed – thereby improving the way our cells and bodies build themselves. Which all goes to say, plants feed us, nourish us, and heal us.

A whole food plant-based diet has been proven to help prevent and reverse the following chronic conditions:

  • Cardiovascular disorders: coronary disease, heart failure, hypertension,

  • Gastrointestinal disorders: gallstones, fatty liver, heartburn, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease

  • Dermatologic disorders: acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea

  • Pulmonary conditions: asthma

  • Rheumatologic conditions: rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, lupus, gout

  • Neurologic disorders: multiple sclerosis, migraines, Parkinson's disease

  • Gynecologic disorders: endometriosis, polycystic ovaries, dysmenorrhea

  • Endocrine disorders: Diabetes, obesity

  • Urologic disorders: kidney stones, prostatitis, erectile dysfunction

Ethos Diet

Nutrition for Chronic Diseases

The Ethos Diet provides exceptional nutrition for chronic diseases – both helping reverse and prevent chronic illness.

There are three pillars of this diet:

  • First, it is plant-based, consisting of vegetables, fruits, starchy roots, whole grains, legumes, seeds, and nuts.

  • Second, the plant-based foods are unrefined and minimally processed.

  • Third, the plant-based foods are grown using environmentally-conscientious, organic farming methods.

This last provision places the Ethos Diet a step beyond the typical Whole Food Plant-Based (WFPB) diet, in that it provides chemical-free, nutrient dense food brought forth from a living soil, while reversing environmental degradation.

At Ethos Primary Care, we have taken Rachel Carson's words to heart: We maintain that it is incumbent upon our generation to accept stewardship of the earth and, by extension, of our children’s future, considering the rapidly deteriorating state of our planet’s health.  And so the Ethos Diet optimizes the health of the body as it optimizes the health of the earth, in a synergistic loop.
